McIlvaine Early Childhood Center Fire Prevention Day - Station 55
Wednesday, October 9, 2013
This year's fire prevention theme was "Kitchen Fires". Throughout the day, children gathered throughout the engine bays in order to learn about fire safety and emergency plans. A group of dedicated firefighters led the children through five, fifteen minute stations.
The first station, with Assistant Chief Dougherty and FF Mike Kravalis, was showing the children 55 Marine 1, or the rescue boat. Student learned about boating and other water related safety.
The second station was with FF Ken Graw. FF Graw discussed the use and operation of Tanker 55, he elaborated on the importance of getting a lot of water to non-hydrant areas very quickly.
With Fire Police Lindale, FF Quillen, and FF Cockburn, students discussed the importance of moving out of the way for emergency vehicles, as well as how the Brush unit, 55-0, operates. In this station the children were allowed to operate a 1" hose line aimed at a traffic cone about 15 yards away.
Assistant Chief Vautard and Probationary FF Lewis showed the children how to don all firefighting gear. Chief Vautard also discussed the importance of staying low in smoky conditions and how to establish a meeting place within the family. Smoke detectors are a large part of saving lives, there is a much higher chance of survival if there are working smoke alarms in the house.
The final station was in the ambulance bay. Students were shown how basic equipment on the BLS ambulance is used. They climbed in and out of the ambulance asking plenty of questions along the way.
Fire prevention was a huge success this year and a thank you goes out to all those who supported the event.
